The Northern Territory

The Northern Territory
A Poem about Australia’s Under Appreciated Northern Territory

Somber yet full of wonder…
I am the Northern Territory who lies over yonder…
“Who am I?” They all ponder…
“What can I offer?” they all wonder…

Darwin is my main city and I have many places that seem boring but sure are lovely…
Here are some places where you can see some of my beauty…
Kakadu, Arnhem Land, & Litchfield National Park are to the north of my territory…
Uluru, Kata-Tjuta, & Tenant Creek are to the south; add these to your itinerary…

Isolated and solitary…
I am located at the top most of the country…
It’s a little sad here now, I wish you could come here and visit me…
For only a few care and recognize me and I am very lonely…

Because of Tracy’s heartless madness…
It has been 43 years of this lonely and dreary sadness…
On a whim, she left 45,000 of my people homeless…
And 65 of my people died on a whim of her frenzied madness…

With their hearts filled with sorrow and dread…
They all left me forlorn and to other places they fled…
My heart was rend asunder while it slowly bled…
And cannot be mended by any thread…

Neglected by everyone else but my people across the land…
I was many times destroyed by chaos or disaster at a scale that is grand…
But yet here I am and I still stand…
I always stood up even though I was unbuilt by fate’s hands…

Destroyed and rebuilt due to chaos and disaster…
A place both lovely and sad but filled with wonder…
Visit me me and experience the wonders I offer…
I am the Northern Territory located over yonder…
